FIREPOWER is pleased to announce it has been awarded a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund which will enable it to carry out an exciting new project called “ Fighting Talk”. Fighting Talk is an oral history project that will focus on post Second World War heritage of the Royal Regiment of Artillery with particular emphasis on the conflicts in the Falklands, Northern Ireland, the Balkans, Iraq and Afghanistan. Gunners have participated in every conflict involving the British Army since WW2 and so have a unique and numerically large collective insight of our national history; this period has been overshadowed by a number of conflicts which has yet to be recorded fully.
‘Fighting Talk’ is a project for volunteers to gather oral histories to record the experiences of Gunners who have fought in conflicts from the Falklands to Afghanistan and Iraq today. The oral histories will be conserved in the Museum’s archive for future generations but will also be used for “Meet the Soldier” sessions during school and other visits and outreach sessions to the local community, ie schools, care/retirement homes and senior citizen and other social groups. The recordings and items collected will be used to complement the Museum’s new Gunners Today exhibition to provide vital human perspective that will maximise understanding and accessibility of the subject matter. Phase 1 of the exhibition is now open to the public.
If you wish to apply to become a volunteer interviewer of transcriber on this project please contact Nigel Clifton on nigelc@firepower.org.uk
